Since our founding in 1943, the Tarettes have celebrated each other, strengthened friendships, and supported Queen City Yacht Club. Our name is derived from the word, "tar," a British term for "sailor." When we were founded -- in 1943 -- it seemed only natural that the spouses of the captains would be the "Tarettes."
Time has brought many changes from those days more than 70 years ago when the founding members envisioned this women’s group as a satisfying social club during wartime. Today's "new wave" of Tarettes are involved in boating, club events, social activities, and community service. We are truly "Women at the Helm" as most of us are QCYC captains.
In addition to promoting active boating, we sponsor special events, memorials for QCYC family members, and philanthropic projects to benefit the community. Hawaiian Theme Night, Captains’ Christmas Dinner, and volunteer service days at the Treehouse Wearhouse, which benefits foster children in Seattle, are some of the ways Tarettes invest our energy.
All women of Queen City Yacht Club are considered members of Tarettes and are encouraged to participate in the activities. For dates and times, see the QCYC calendar at www.queencity.org; or contact the QCYC office at 206-709-2000.
